Another hat pattern but what can I say they are good summer knitting and it's almost instant gradification, or as close as you are going to get with knitting. I think this hat is beautiful and Ysolda's blog is awesome. The pattern for this hat can be found here.
I have just gotten past the first 2 X 2 ribbing in my circley. It took me a lot longer than I thought it would. Mostly because my husband has decided that the sound of my needles clicking together is driving him crazy. What's a girl to do.

This bag by Drops is the free pattern of the day. I really like bags that are not felted, like this one. It can be found here. It is knit in a bulky weight yarn on US 8 needles. I think that this would make a really tight fabric which would be perfect for a hand bag. Check it out. It would also make a great summer project, in that, it would not be too hot to knit.
The Utopia Cable Hat is totally awesome. The cable pattern is very unique and looks fairly simple to achieve. Not only that but it's a hat so it is perfect summer knitting material. The pattern can be found here. Hope you enjoy that one.
Now, on to my own knitting news. It's bad news. I had to totally frog Circley (aka Circular Shrug) and I was, oh, 15 inches in. The amazing thing about it is I am totally not even bummed out. I just ripped it out last night and I cast on the right number of stitches today. Does the fact that I didn't mind and am just happy to be knitting mean I am a process and not a product knitter? I don't know.

Todays pattern is the Ribbed Baby Jacket by Debbie Bliss. I absolutely adore Debbie Bliss' baby patterns. I own one of her pattern books and it is definitely one of my favorites. This pattern is of course free and can be found here. It is knit with a worsted weight yarn on US 7 and 8 needles and the sizes range from 0-24 months. I think that my son could still fit into a 24 month size so I just might have to make one of those for him. Oh, and I really like this pattern because it is definitely unisex.
Lets start with Design Your Own Knits: In 5 Easy Steps by Debbie Abrahams, because I like it the best. This book really freaking rocks. I will tell you the only think I don't like about it first: it does not really go into very much detail about knitting in the round. Having said that, here is the rest of the story. The chapters are as follows:
1. Inspiration, Stitches, and Yarn - this chapter discuses places to find inspiration and how to translate that to knitting, different types of stitching, and yarns and how their qualities affect your knitting. 2. Ideas Onto Paper - this chapter discuses using proportional graph paper as a tool for design. 3. Knitting a Swatch - discuses how to knit a gauge swatch and how to use it when designing. 4. Mapping Out the Design - this is where you really get your hands dirty and a lot of the math is explained to you. 5. Getting Kitting - helps you take all that planning and turn it into a garment. The end of the book also has some core patterns that you can manipulate and charts for average measurements for if you are knitting for someone you can not take measurements on. I love, love, love it!
Now, for Teach Yourself Visually:Knitting Design by Sharon Turner. This book is also very good but is mostly just has patterns for you to alter here and there to make your own. This is great if you don't want to go through the trouble of designing from the ground up or if you are ready to just throw yourself in there and start knitting. I like this book but it is not very informative and does not actually teach you how to make your own pattern.

And the free pattern of the day is pattern 0-47. This is basically a poncho. I know many say that they are out of style but I like them anyway! I like this pattern because it is nice and open so you could wear it indoors of out. In other words, I don't think that I would have to keep taking it on and off every time I went in to someplace. Of course, this pattern is free and can be found at Drops. This website has a ton of free patterns and I think that the next few that I post about will be from there. I hope you enjoy.
In life, things have been really busy as you can probably tell from the lack of posting. Today is mothers day though and I can do what ever I want to. Most of which seems to be chores but what are ya gonna do.

This is the republic hat. The great thing about hats is that they can be knit up really fast, they usually don't take too much yarn, and they make great gifts. I love this hat it is simple yet it has some unique design features. You can down load the pattern here. I am thinking that the button might be a little hard to find. Ok, not a little I don't think that there is a chance in h-e-double hocky sticks that I am going to find one any where near me.
Today's pattern is a shawl pattern. I usually don't see myself as a shawl kind of person and I think that this might be the only shawl pattern that I have saved. It is really beautiful and simple. I think that the simple look of the repeated pattern appeals to me the most. This one might go on my ravelry queue in the very near future. The pattern can be found at knitty.com.
Again this is a free pattern, as are all the patterns found at knitty.
Speaking of knitty, I love this site. They have high quality patterns and articles and it is all free. I know everyone has been there but just in case you haven't please go check it out and show some support.
We have had a very busy weekend. So, not much on the knitting front has gotten done. I have not even been able to role up an entire skein into a ball. I hope tonight to at least get that finished. We have seen all manner of relatives and have been to the May Fair which is an arts festival where we live. We have even been eating out and today is just as busy as the last two. Now we have to fit all the house work into one day to make up for the last two days.
I have also ordered to books on designing your own knits. I can not wait till these get here. I have some really great ideas that I can't wait to try out. I don't really know if designing is something that I am capable of doing but I guess we will find out. Most likely the hard way. That's the way I learn most things.

Real quick, I just want to say that designers who take the time to create a pattern and then offer it for free are very generous and I thank you for that. Today's pattern is Hug by Jennifer Thurston. I love me some shrugs. I think I stated that last time but hey, I love shrugs. This is another very fast knit with super bulky yarn and size 10.5 needles.
Life
I love it when there is a convention and the boss and half the lab are all away in Florida sitting on the beach with out me. No, really, I do. The lab is very laid back.

I have tons of free patterns that I have found on the web that I love. I am thinking that what I want to do is feature one as frequently as I can. I can't promise daily but hopefully a few times a week. That is until I run out of patterns but people just keep coming up with more and are gracious enough to offer them for free so we will see.
Today's free pattern is Blackberry. This pattern can be found at Knitty.com. I love shrugs! I am always freezing at work, especially in the summer when they have the air cranked up. I also like this pattern because it is knit in a bulky yarn. That would make it really fast to knit up.
In other news today, does your brain ever hurt just from thinking really hard all day for eight plus hours. Mine does today. I ran an experiment today that really took all day and was somewhat grueling. Glad that's over. Now I think it is time for a nice Jack and Coke after the little one goes to bed.
